Gold Coast's stalled $2.2 billion Coomera Hospital back on track and set to restart construction

Concept design for the new Coomera Hospital on the Gold Coast

The Queensland Government has completed the concept design phase for an upsized new Coomera Hospital on the Gold Coast, with main construction set to commence in the second half of 2026 and the first beds due to open by 2031.

The facility has been expanded from the previously planned 400-bed hospital to at least 600 beds across two stages, after the project stalled following the LNP's election victory in 2024.

Early works carried out under the former state government were removed from the site as the incoming government undertook what it described as a redesign to address planning deficiencies and cost blowouts.

The projected cost of the hospital has risen from $1.3 billion to $2.25 billion, with the original opening date of 2027 no longer achievable.

Stage 1 will deliver a 400-bed hospital by 2031 featuring an emergency department, intensive care unit, operating theatres, maternity services and mental health units.

Stage 2 will add a further 200 beds along with day surgery, renal dialysis, oncology and palliative care facilities, with completion expected by 2032.

The project forms part of the Queensland Government's broader Hospital Rescue Plan, which aims to deliver more than 2,600 new hospital beds statewide.

The new design establishes a landmark health precinct at Coomera which includes a 12-storey clinical services building housing the emergency department, intensive care unit, operating theatres, mental health, maternity, paediatric and renal services, along with multiple inpatient units.

The project will also have a seven-storey ambulatory care building providing outpatient clinics, day oncology, allied health, pathology and education facilities, connected to the main hospital via link bridges.

Th design provides for multi-storey car parking and on-grade parking.

The Coomera Hospital will sit alongside Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital as the third major public hospital serving the Gold Coast, a region whose population is projected to exceed one million within the next two decades.

Main construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with the government flagging further details on contractor appointments and project milestones in coming months.

Member for Coomera Michael Crandon, who has long campaigned for the hospital, says the project will bring significant economic benefits to the northern Gold Coast corridor.

“We expect the new hospital build to generate around 1,000 workers on site when construction peaks,” says Crandon.
