Roberts Co has been appointed to build Macquarie York’s Sunset Residences development in Surfers Paradise, representing the first project win in Queensland for the recapitalised construction group.

The Sydney-based builder, which is backed by a $50 million investment from Dubai-based developer Arada to grow its national footprint, has been appointed early contractor involvement (ECI) partner for the project which will comprise 72 luxury apartments across 30 storeys on a riverfront site on Sunset Boulevard.

Roberts Co says the appointment involves working with Macquarie York to optimise buildability, program, staging and procurement strategies ahead of the project’s construction start.

The Sydney-headquartered Macquarie York has been highly active in the Gold Coast market over the past five years after completing three projects, including two on Chevron Island, and currently progressing three new projects, including two at Palm Beach.

Sunset Residences, which is planned for a 1,057sqm site and designed by Plus Studio, will include a mix of two, three and four-bedroom apartments as well as a recreation level with gym, yoga space, wet-edge pool and lounge.

“Partnering with Macquarie York on Sunset Residences demonstrates the power of early contractor involvement in setting developments up for success,” says Daniel Nijam, general manager of private clients at Roberts Co.

“Engaging early allows us to refine the design, remove risk, and provide greater certainty around program, cost and delivery.”

Queensland is a key growth market for Roberts Co which was acquired by Arada earlier this year and which previously focused largely on the NSW market.

The company’s Dubai-based owner has previously indicated it could invest up to $100 million to expand Roberts Co’s reach into new markets.

Roberts Co was founded in 2017 by Andrew Roberts, the former CEO of building giant Multiplex, which was the family business established by his father.

Roberts Co is a specialist in delivering complex transport, civic and urban renewal projects in Australia and New Zealand.

“This appointment reinforces our capability in premium residential work and our commitment to bringing Tier-1 expertise with the agility, transparency and accountability developers are looking for,” says Nijam.

Macquarie York director Roy Skaf sees early engagement with Roberts Co helping the group realises the full potential of the Surfers Paradise project which is the first high rise undertaken in the Sunset Boulevard enclave.

“Sunset Residences is a signature project for Macquarie York - a chance to define a new level of riverfront living in Surfers Paradise,” says Skaf.

“Partnering with Roberts Co under an ECI arrangement gives us the confidence that design decisions, construction methodology and programming are being rigorously considered from day one.

“Their collaborative mindset and technical capability are exactly what a project of this quality demands.”

Macquarie York has previously indicated construction of Sunset Residences would begin by the second quarter of 2026.

Roberts Co says today that construction will get under way after the ECI phase and final design resolution.
