Odyssey Lifestyle secures approval for third luxury Gold Coast aged care development

Concept design for Odyssey Lifestyle Care Communities' new Hope Island project.

Odyssey Lifestyle Care Communities has secured approval for its third Gold Coast aged-care project – a twin-tower development on one of the last major undeveloped sites near the waterfront at Hope Island.

The council development approval comes on the heels of Odyssey last year acquiring a fourth site from fellow Gold Coast developer Cru Collective as the company capitalises on demand on the Gold Coast for luxury residences and care services for well-heeled retirees.

The Hope Island project is planned for a vacant 4,639sqm site at 8 Marina Quays Boulevard, directly across the road from Hope Island Marketplace shopping centre and close to Esperance Hope Island, a $250m medium-rise luxury retirement project undertaken by Brisbane's Reside Communities in the central Hope Island precinct.

The Odyssey development will comprise two towers of 13 levels each delivering 188 apartments and offering layouts from one to three bedrooms, with the top floor dedicated to a collection of penthouses.

The company, founded and led by Phil Usher, continues the Odyssey theme of creating retirement villages with premium amenities and services for those who require additional care in later life.

Odyssey Lifestyle Care provides dedicated professional care teams on site at all times, delivering personalised care to residents.

The company says the model is built around a resort-style environment where couples stay together, pets are welcome, grandkids can have sleepovers and “the dignity, independence and well-being of residents are highly respected”.

Usher says development approval for the Hope Island project is a significant milestone for the group which kicked off its first and largest project on the Gold Coast at Robina in 2018.

“We’re creating communities where seniors don’t need to compromise, and this builds on what Odyssey has always set out to do, which is to create a brighter future for ageing Australians,” says Usher.

“There will be numerous features that will generate excitement and given this location has strong connections to the golfing lifestyle, we’ve incorporated several elements we believe people will be very pleased about.

“For local retirees already enjoying life in luxury retirement villages, it will be reassuring to know that when the next stage of life arrives, Odyssey will be there to provide the kind of care and support that respects their lifestyle and preferences.”

Among the amenities provided for residents is an on-site putting green with open-air and covered sections, a virtual driving range and a 19th-hole lounge.

The Hope Island development will also include a coffee shop and a boutique ground-level commercial precinct to service residents, with tenancies yet to be finalised.

Usher says the community has been designed to reflect the demands of seniors buyers that balance personalised care and lifestyle with the comfort of home.

“For us, it’s about creating communities where older Australians can feel at ease, stay connected and enjoy every stage of later life with confidence,” he says.

“Hope Island Odyssey will include a dedicated wellness hub with an on-site doctor surgery for when life take difficult turns, a hairdresser, a luxurious lobby with reception and concierge services available seven days a week, extensive gardens and much more.”

Odyssey Lifestyle is also providing a dedicated shuttle service to run between its Gold Coast communities, connecting the company’s flagship Robina location, which opened in 2020, and the Chevron Island project which is under construction and due for completion early next year.

The company has yet to announce plans for its fourth development at Burleigh Waters on a 3,600sqm site which is part of a proposed $2 billion master-planned project by Cru Collective on the waterfront at Lake Orr.
