QUEENSLANDERS can expect more pirates and earthquakes under a re-elected Liberal-National government - on film, at least.
Premier Campbell Newman has announced a $60 million Queensland First Tourism Fund to attract more blockbuster films like Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and San Andreas.
Newman says the funds will support Screen Queensland as well as Tourism and Events Queensland.
"[The government has] invested in attracting film production, bringing Unbroken, San Andreas and Modern Family to Queensland, with Disney's new Pirates of the Caribbean movie being filmed here this year injecting around $100 million into the state's economy," he says.
"While these initiatives are creating thousands of jobs and seeing tourism numbers increase, we know the job's not done and we're going to keep working hard to attract more major events and film productions to Queensland."
Qantas experienced a 25 per cent spike in website visits after the Modern Family episodes filmed in the Whitsundays went to air internationally, according to the tourism minister's office.
The new announcement comes four days after the Labor Party promised $40 million over four years to support the tourism industry.
