Master Builders Queensland has promoted deputy CEO Sue-Ann Fresneda to the top job after Paul Bidwell announced in February his resignation from the construction industry association after four years as CEO.

Fresneda, who has been with Master Builders for the past 13 years, has worked alongside Bidwell since he was appointed CEO in 2022 overseeing one of the most challenging periods for the construction industry led by rising costs as well as staff and materials shortages.

However, the new CEO says she is “energised” by the organisation’s future and is keen to step into the role at a pivotal time for the industry.

“While we are facing some tough challenges, there’s also a real sense of opportunity ahead," says Fresneda.

"We’re already building momentum and I’m looking forward to working with members to ensure our association continues to be a strong, practical voice for the industry.”

Since joining Master Builders in 2013, Fresneda has driven the commercial success of the association in what she describes as a “profit for purpose” model, where strong commercial success allows the business to strategically invest in the right mix of products and services for members.

Master Builders says Fresneda has a keen understanding of the current workforce shortage crisis facing the construction industry. Her work in this space is backed by a position on the Construction Skills Queensland Board from 2018 and her appointment as board chair last year.

Master Builders president Chris Taylor says Fresneda was chosen to replace Bidwell after a “robust recruitment process”, with the board unanimous in its decision.

“Her dedication to members, strong industry knowledge, and outstanding leadership skills made her the clear choice and we are confident Master Builders will continue to go from strength to strength with Sue-Ann as our new CEO," says Taylor.

Michael Hopkins, the executive manager of advocacy and member services, has been appointed deputy CEO following Fresneda’s promotion.
