DevOps1 acquires Innablr to challenge global systems-integrator giants in Australia

DevOps1 founder and CEO Alex Rea

Sydney-based consultancy DevOps1 has acquired cloud engineering firm Innablr, putting the company on track to double its headcount over the next two years and create a scaled local alternative to global players dominating the systems-integrator market in Australia.

The acquisition, which leverages DevOps1’s 90 per cent growth over the past two years, has immediately boosted the combined group’s headcount to 130.

It also combines DevOps1’s enterprise expertise in cloud, security and engineering with the Melbourne-based Innablr’s decade of cloud, data and platform engineering experience to deliver the company “transformation at scale”.

DevOps1 CEO Alex Rea, who previously led large-scale technology organisations at Wipro and Ampion, says the acquisition reflects both the level of opportunity in the market and the lack of Australian challengers.

Under his leadership, DevOps1 has built a strong enterprise customer base with the likes of Allianz, Toyota Finance, Optus and Vocus, among others.

“Global players are consolidating the market which leaves Australian organisations with fewer specialist options at scale,” says Rea.

“By combining DevOps1 and Innablr, we’re building a homegrown consultancy with the size, depth and focus to compete head-on with the multinationals.

“Our customers want an alternative that is close to the market, understands the local context, and can deliver specialist skills at pace.”

DevOps1, which was established 15 years ago, specialises in cloud, data, security and platform engineering.

Innablr, founded a decade ago by Dan Hornby, is an engineering led consultancy known for its technical expertise and strong engineering culture.

The team is said to have deep experience in helping organisations design, build and scale modern cloud native and data platforms.

Innablr founder and CEO Dan Hornby

Hornby, the Innablr CEO, says he met Rea through a mutual connection and quickly recognised that joining forces would accelerate their ability to compete for larger, more complex engagements.

“With DevOps1 based mainly in Sydney and us in Melbourne, the geographic fit was clear,” says Hornby.

“Just as importantly, our service lines complemented each other, with cloud, engineering, data and security coming together to create a compelling offering.

“Innablr has always been about using the latest technology available to enable our customers to innovate faster and with more confidence as they decide their technology roadmap.”

Hornby, who will remain with the business following the acquisition, says the partners see deep data and security expertise as “a key enabler to successful adoption of cloud native technologies, no matter which hyperscaler our customers are using”.

“With DevOps1, we believe the combined reach of both companies grows exponentially, thanks to both teams bringing perfectly matched capabilities,” he says.
