Bluey producer Ludo Studio embarks on Netflix family feature film Allen

Directors Daley Pearson and Jeffrey Walker.

Brisbane-headquartered Ludo Studio, the Emmy and BAFTA-award winning company known for its work on global hit animation series Bluey, has started production on a new Netflix family feature film with the working title of Allen - a tale of friendship and adventure set against the backdrop of a Queensland coastal town.

The film's script was written by Ludo co-founder Daley Pearson and Sophie Miller, who both worked together on the 2024 Stan TV mini series Thou Shalt Not Steal.

"Allen is really a story about love, family and all those big and small moments from childhood that end up shaping who we are when we grow up," says Pearson, who is also an executive producer of the film alongside Miller and fellow Ludo co-founder Charlie Aspinwall.

"Getting the opportunity to make this story in this part of the world - in the town where I grew up in, inspired by the friends and family I grew up with - is a dream. We're creating Allen for families to watch together."

Minister for the Arts John-Paul Langbroek describes Ludo Studio as a "Queensland entrepreneurial success story".

"The Crisafulli Government, through Screen Queensland, is thrilled to support their first locally made, live-action feature film," Langbroek says.

"Filmed at Screen Queensland Studios in Brisbane, this Netflix production will share our state’s stories and showcase our beautiful Gold and Sunshine Coasts to the world."

Netflix's vice-president for content APAC (ex-India), Minyoung Kim, says the group is "delighted" to create a film that the "entire family can enjoy", with the Queensland coast providing "the perfect, heartwarming backdrop for this tale".

"The team at Ludo Studio are among Australia's most exceptional storytellers, injecting this film with their characteristic relatability and wit," Kim says.

Supported by Screen Queensland’s production attraction strategy and the Post, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) Incentive, the feature will be shot mainly around Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Allen will be released globally on Netflix and joins a growing slate of Australian films and shows including previously released The Survivors, Apple Cider Vinegar, Territory, Boy Swallows Universe among others. Upcoming releases including Son of a Donkey, Heartbreak High S3 and newly announced My Brilliant Career.
