Amazon's Australian expedition continues in Sydney

Online retail behemoth Amazon has pushed forward with its expansion plans in Australia, opening a brand new fulfilment centre.

Based in Moorebank, South West Sydney, Amazon's second fulfilment centre opened its doors this morning.

The latest fulfilment centre is nearly double the size of the first Australian fulfilment centre in Melbourne, and should rapidly increase the speed at which Amazon can get products to customers.

Amazon recently expanded its popular Amazon Prime offering to Australian customers, giving Prime users faster and free shipping on all orders for the price of a regular subscription fee.

Inevitably, the new 43,000 square metre Sydney fulfilment centre should cater to the demand for the Prime offering, which would require an improved logistics chain on behalf of the American e-tailer.

Amazon director of operations Robert Bruce says the new Sydney facility will improve shipping times for Australian customers.

"This is an exciting milestone for Amazon in Australia," says Bruce.

"The Sydney facility in Moorebank will help Amazon ensure that customers enjoy fast and reliable delivery across more areas of the country."

The new fulfilment centre will also create a number of new jobs for residents in Sydney, according to Liverpool Mayor, Wendy Waller.

"We look forward to having good jobs for people close to where they live and working with Amazon as a partner in the local community," says Waller.

"We expect the Sydney fulfilment centre will become a key logistics hub thanks to its strategic position in South West Sydney."
