In a move to tackle legal issues of the future, Allens has launched its Hub for Law, Technology and Innovation in partnership with the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
The new division, spearheaded by a team of UNSW academics and Allens lawyers, will research legal problems surrounding data, artificial intelligence, privacy, online social collaboration, intellectual property and digital platforms.
The initiative aims to explore challenges that modern lawyers will face as the industry continues to transform in the digital realm.
Anna Collyer, partner and head of innovation at Allens, expects the hub will play an important role in navigating the future of law in Australia.
"The unprecedented pace and scale of technological advancement has meant that our legal system is in many cases no longer fit for purpose," says Collyer.
"This not only runs the risk of legal uncertainty, but also of hampering Australian businesses' ability to harness innovation.
"The Allens Hub's new research streams will provide world-leading insights to help guide Australia's legal evolution. We're looking forward to working with UNSW researchers on these exciting projects."
The Hub breaks down 10 separate research 'streams' which include research topics Data Justice, FinTech, Reinventing Intellectual Property and Data Protection and Surveillance.
Lyria Bennett Moses, director of the Hub and associate professor at UNSW, says the team will also be looking closely at the role of technology in promoting access to justice.
"We are looking at a broad range of questions at the intersection of law and new technologies," says Bennett Moses.
"The Hub will bring together a diverse group of UNSW academics, working with lawyers at Allens as well as industry, the legal profession, government and civil society, to explore the law's role in governing data-driven decision-making, recognising new 'persons' and promoting innovation, among other topics."
A total of 22 UNSW academics will work closely with staff from Allens on the Hub's research streams.
