AN architecture and urban design firm has won the 2011 Gold Coast Urban Design Awards.
Varsity Lakes-based degenhartSHEDD was recognised for its contribution to ‘community enhancement’ for its Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) project in Robina.
The AITC (pictured) is the city’s first trade orientated high school to offer students a chance to pursue apprenticeships while undertaking senior studies.
DegenhartSHEDD director Amy Degenhart says the project’s aim was to prepare students for work by giving them a more corporate and professional study environment.
“We used galvanised metals to give an industrial touch, while the corporate side is reflected in the administration building’s mirror glass with the same glazing used for offices,” she says.
“The administration building also serves as a gateway to learning spaces, providing students with opportunities to talk with staff on a more professional and equal level.”
Degenhart believes the firm was chosen because of its previous experience on various projects and existing contacts with the Gold Coast City Council, Robina Chamber of Commerce and the Gold Coast Education and Training Network.
