STATE RECONSTRUCTION HITS $3BN MARK

QUEENSLAND Premier Anna Bligh (pictured) has praised the climbing value of Southern Queensland’s reconstruction program.

Bligh claims the value of reconstruction projects in the region have surpassed $914 million, with $164.8 million in works completed, $556.5 underway or out to tender and $192.9 million in the pipeline.

"These dollars mean jobs for southern Queensland – the reconstruction of state and local government roads and assets through to 2013-14 will support more than 15,000 jobs around the state,” says Bligh.

"Across Queensland the reconstruction program has hit $3 billion with almost $700 million in reconstruction works completed so far – and it's just the start as the reconstruction program continues over the next two to three years.”

The Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) is monitoring reconstruction region by region to ensure a maximum return on investment. Funds allocated for each region include $569.7 million (southeast), $994.9 million (central), $436.6 million (north) and $115 million (far north).

QRA chair major-general Richard Wilson, describes cooperation between state and local agencies on projects as positive.

"Travelling throughout the state and seeing council and Main Roads crews busy on the job, is the best demonstration the reconstruction effort is progressing well," says Wilson.
