New fire station for Nerang

A NEW $3.45 million station at Nerang will be built by Badge Constructions.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts, says work is expected to start on-site this week with a completion date pencilled in for mid-2010. Roberts says firefighters responded to almost 400 calls in the Nerang area during the 2008-09 financial year.

“The Gold Coast is one of the growth capitals of Australia and it is important that the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service continually assesses population growth to ensure it remains well-placed to respond to current and future demand,” he says.

“Features of the new station include a two-bay engine room and accommodation for up to six on-shift staff, a dedicated training room, contemporary office and mess facilities and a purpose-built racking facility for protective firefighting clothing.”

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service superintendent Peter Ryan, says the new station will not only benefit firefighters but the community as well.

“The range of incidents firefighters in this area respond to is vast and the Nerang station will be fully equipped with the most up to date technologies available for firefighters to meet future service delivery requirements,” he says.
